ARTIST RESIDENCY – AGA LAB, AMSTERDAM
My focus for the residency was to learn silk screen printing in order to bring a more graphic quality to my work. I also wanted to expand my knowledge of analogue photography techniques, as well as develop and print film in the darkroom.
My project aimed to explore the Netherlands relationship with nature. Comparing to the wilderness of Scotland, my first observation on moving here was how nature is contained. Through its integration into the designs of every city street, to filling the interiors of Dutch houses. This has an abstract quality; although everything you see is natural, it is an illusion as it was planned and created by man. My aim at AGA LAB was to visualise and combine these conflicting ideas of design and nature.
Artist’s I referenced during this project were Mondrian, Ivor Abrahams, Moholy-Nagy and Shigeru Onishi.
