a sense of place (2020)

LEITH SCHOOL OF ART

This project began by drawing in various locations around Leith. I became captivated by a particular bridge, where Great Junction street and North Junction street meet. I continuously returned to this bridge and drew and photographed it from every angle. From a distance, this bridge is picturesque crossing the water of Leith, but close up it is dirty, damp and dark with a sinister feeling. I explored this contradiction through using a wide range of mark making techniques. I then used this method to depict other bridges in Scotland.

Artist’s I referenced during this project were Kate Downie, Turner and Pierre Bonnard.
